Hutchison Ports has secured a deal to operate Ahmed Bin Rashid Port in Umm Al Quwain (UAQ), United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Hong Kong-based port operator will run the facility under the name Hutchison Ports UAQ. Andy Tsoi, managing director, Middle East and Africa, at Hutchinson Ports, stated: “The UAE economy is growing strongly and there is great demand for terminal facilities in the northern part of the Emirates. Our target is to improve the service level of the port to facilitate the emirate’s import and export trade. Vessels entering Port Rashid face risk from sunken dhow wrecks

Wed Jan 02 10:39:17 CET 2013 arnekiel

Two sunken dhows, large enough to be a danger to passing ships, have been discovered in the waters at Port Rashid, the National newspaper reported on Jan 2, 2013. The vessels, each about 20 metres long, rise about five metres from the seabed of the harbour were discovered by HMS Enterprise, a British Royal Navy ship on a nine-month deployment to the Middle East, and her new survey motor boat, Spitfire, during two days of surveying work off Dubai. After surveyed the wrecks, they passed the data to Dubai's port authority and other mariners have been alerted to the presence of the dhows. The dhows Commander Derek Rae, the commanding officer of the Enterprise, said the chance to carry out the survey training, granted by the authorities in Dubai, was "invaluable". http://www.arabiansupplychain.com/article-8311-port-rashid-vessels-face-risk-from-sunken-dhow-wrecks/#.UOP_sm8b6Hg

Queen Elizabeth 2 to Anchor Port Rashid Makeover

Wed Jul 04 11:47:52 CEST 2012 arnekiel

Dubai’s decision to turn the Queen Elizabeth 2 into a floating hotel has ended years of uncertainty. Now it will be in Port Rashid for good. The 300-room hotel-ship is expected to open in 18 months, once renovations are complete. Port Rashid, where cruise ships dock when they pass through Dubai, is getting a makeover too. There will be new shops and a maritime museum, according to Sultan bin Sulayem, the chairman of Istithmar World. “Wait 18 months,” he said. “You will not recognize this area. Take my word. This is Dubai.” More http://blogs.wsj.com/source/2012/07/03/queen-elizabeth-2-ocean-liner-to-anchor-port-rashid-makeover/
